FORMER MARIACHI SOL DE MEXICO
FORMER MARIACHI LOS CAMPEROS
Julio Hernandez was born in Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, into a family of Mariachi musicians. He began playing the violin at the age of 8, studying classical violin privately and then later at a school for the performing arts. He played in the youth orchestra and by 16 was invited to play in the Symphony Orchestra of Jalapa, Veracruz. Julio reluctantly declined the offer and instead followed his heart all the way to Mexico City to pursue his passion for Mariachi music. He played with a few organized groups in D.F. until joining Juan Gabriel's own "Mariachi de Mi Tierra". Julio toured with Juan Gabriel until 1999 when he decided to move to the United States to continue his Mariachi journey. He played briefly in Tucson, Phoenix and Chicago before joining Mariachi Sol de Mexico, where he spent seven years. In 2007, after 7 years in the group, Julio decided to take a break from the big stages and hectic tour schedules. He moved to Albuquerque to be near family and taught privately and played with the local Mariachis. 9 months later he was back in Los Angeles itching to be on stage with the best Mariachis in the world. He worked with a few local LA-based groups and freelanced as a studio musician, recording with Lady Gaga, Luis Miguel and Jose Feliciano to name a few. He also stayed active as an instructor for various Mariachi conferences. In 2014, Julio joined Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano. He has described this new chapter in his life and career as a culmination of all his hard work and experience after many years of strong dedication to playing Mariachi music at the highest level. Today he feels honored and grateful for the opportunity to share the stage and form part of Camperos with musicians that are equally dedicated to their craft. "This isn't a hobby" he says, "this is my life"
